Why Skybox?

I had to manage a lot of mail accounts at once. Two of my own to start with, plus one I shared with a friend, and several from my family, for whenever something needed taking care of. Then I started studying, so of course another one joined the pile. I was using Thunderbird back then, and it was great for my own stuff, but with every new account it got more cluttered, until it just wasn't manageable anymore. At some point I thought: why is there no elegant way to fix this?

Profiles were the answer. I couldn't find a Thunderbird alternative that had them, so I started building my own, not knowing yet what a mess email would turn out to be. I was building a lot of web apps with React at the time, so doing the same for Skybox felt natural. And the further I got, the more advantages of that approach kept showing up.

Skybox is what grew out of it.
