Why Skybox?

I had to manage a lot of mail accounts at once. Two of my own to start with, plus one I shared with a friend — and several from my family, for whenever something needed taking care of. Then I started studying, so of course another one joined the pile. I was using Thunderbird back then, and it was great for my own stuff — but with every new account it got more cluttered, until it just wasn't manageable anymore. At some point I thought: why is there no elegant way to fix this?

Profiles were the answer. I couldn't find a Thunderbird alternative that had them, so I started building my own — not knowing yet what a mess email would turn out to be. I was building a lot of web apps with React at the time, so doing the same for Skybox felt natural. And the further I got, the more advantages of that approach kept showing up.

Skybox is what grew out of it.
